Konstantin Makovsky (1839-1915) was born to an amateur painter father and a gifted musical mother. From an early age his mother guided him as to follow in her footsteps, but her son soon began to show a tremendous ability for painting.
He entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1851 where he became easily the top student. Seven years later he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg, and became quite a notable figure in the creative community; Tsar Alexander II became his patron, and his work featured many members of the Imperial Family and nobility. Konstantin’s romanticism focused on the ideal life of the Russians in previous centuries, many pieces featured beautiful Boyaryshnya; the traditional Russian beauties.
At the World’s Fair of 1889 in Paris he received the Large Gold Medal for his paintings Death of Ivan the Terrible, The Judgement of Paris, and Demon and Tamara. He was one of the most highly appreciated and highly paid Russian artists of the time, and considered a forerunner for Russian Impressionism. [x]
